The course has been designed to offer an ambitious programme of study in Film Making at post graduate level (UK Level 7) that encourages students to advance their knowledge of the film making process, as well as expand their understanding and expertise in line with current creative demands around the changing environment of film production, as well as aligning with the university’s strategic aims, which are:
- to provide a breadth and richness of experience that enables all our students to reach their full potential
- to provide teaching and support for learning of the highest quality
- to undertake excellent research and innovative professional practice which enrich students’ learning and create impact and benefit for others
- to build partnerships which create opportunity, innovation and mutual benefit for the communities we serve
The overall aims of the course are therefore: - a broad examination of the film making process, that offers a wide-ranging theoretical context to underpin the practical aspects of film making - equips students to provide innovative responses to problem solving in the field
- a coherent curriculum, designed and delivered by practitioners with wide ranging cinematic interests
- a focused curriculum which will equip students with long-term career strategies, assisting them to evolve their collaborative and individual working practices, and enhance their ability to lead a team and manage a production
In addition, the course has been designed to enable students to:
- develop a range of post graduate-level practice-based outputs, which should ‘showcase” their skills through their portfolio of films
- allow them to explore technologies on the edge of traditional film making practices, for instance, 360/VR, as it impacts on their field
- investigate and evaluate current film making practices in relation to the commercial and non-commercial fields
- establish an informed perspective on a wide range of cultural, political, and economic factors affecting their own practice
- establish technical fluency in a number of film making practices and technologies
- enhance the students’ abilities to establish an innovative personal practice
